Your employer can garnish your wages if forced to do so by court order or federal law. Some debts like child support, taxes, and student loans, do not require a court order.

Federal law limits the amount of employee wages an employer may garnish for certain debts, but not all debts are subject to these limits. Employees are entitled to advance notice of student loan default garnishments and back tax levies, along with certain documents for the employee to submit to address the amount and/or schedule of payment.
